BELFAST'S £250,000 ADMIRALTY SHIP REPAIR CONTRACTS.

Belfast ship repairers outside the Queen's Island, who dealt with hundreds of naval and merchant vessels during the war, are still working to capacity on Admiralty contracts worth over £250,000.

Three firms employing 1,200 men are engaged in the refit of twenty trawlers and other requisitioned craft and with more yet to be taken in hand the work will last well into the present year.

At the Clarendon Dock and Herdman Channel trawlers that throughout the war were mine-sweeping or hunting U-boats are being almost completely rebuilt.Stripped until they are little more than shells, they are redecked from stem to stern, electrical systems rewired and with new auxiliary and fishing gear installed they are ready after three months' work to proceed direct to the fishing grounds.

A. W. Hamilton and Co., Prince's Dock, recently completed the Peaceful Star, formerly the British Honduras, and are handling the Saturn, Garola, Drangey and Cylese.

The Man o' War, one of the most noted anti-submarine trawlers and a ship well-known to the naval base, has been fitted out by David Scott & Son, Corporation Street, who are working on the British Guiana, Bronte, Loch Tulla and Libyan as well as the cableship Straid and the salvage vessel First.

Another firm, Gregg & Patterson, Pilot Street, formed by two enterprising shipyardmen during the war, has turned out the Vascama and is dealing with two large trawlers belonging to the company which names its ships after English football clubs. They are the Coventry City and Norwich City ocean-going escorts which sailed thousands of miles and had several encounters with U-boats.This firm also has the Le Tigre and Guava.

Robert Craig & Sons (Engineers) Ltd., Great George's Street, are sub-contractors for some of the work now being done in the port.

This welcome activity, which is in addition to the usual repair work of the firms engaged, follows upon a request by the Northern Ireland Government to the Admiralty when naval maintenance began to fall off.It recognises the greater efforts of the smaller Belfast ship-repairers in keeping ships at sea during the war.
