CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR SAILORS.

The Countess of Clanwilliam makes an appeal on behalf of the Ladies' Association of the Missions to Seamen for funds to provide Christmas cheer and comforts for our sailors in the port. Her Ladyship says: -- "We are anxious this year to give a dinner at some place in the city on Christmas Eve to as many seamen as may be gathered together; and to hold social evenings on Christmas Day and Boxing Day at the Institute, 47 Queen's Square. These occasions will be for men of the Navy and Mercantile Marine. We hope also to raise enough to help our fund for providing teas on Sundays and simple refreshments at the weekly concerts." During the past four months the chaplain, Rev. F.A. Wilkinson, M.A., R.N., has entertained 650 seamen to tea on Sundays. Donations may be sent to the hon. treasurer, Ladies' Association, Missions to Seamen Institute, 47 Queen's Square.

MID-TYRONE U.V.F. COLOURS.

DEDICATION SERVICE AT OMAGH.

A great united thanksgiving service, which was unique in the history of Omagh, was held in St. Columba's Parish Church, Omagh, on Sunday evening, and was attended by upwards of 1,500 people of all Protestant denominations. A united choir of almost 100 voices from the four Protestant churches in the town led in the praise service effectually, while an orchestral accompaniment was provided by N.C.O.'s and men of the Ayrshire Yeomanry and the Misses Moriarty, Edenderry. Miss M'Adams was the organist.

Rev. A. M'Quade, rector, and Rev. J.S. Willis, curate, read the prayers. The lessons were read by Rev. Mr. Eakins, Presbyterian minister, and Rev. J.W. Stutt, Methodist minister. Rev. A. Macafee, First Presbyterian Church, led in prayer, and Rev. C.A. Peacock, Assistant Chaplain -- General to the Forces, delivered an earnest and impressive service from the Song of Solomon, 2nd chapter and 4th verse -- "His banner over me was love."

During the service a most interesting ceremony took place when the colours of the Mid-Tyrone Battalion U.V.F., now merged in the 9th Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, were dedicated. The colours were borne into the church by Captain A.H.R. Duncan, who was preceded by two N.C.O.'s of the Inniskillings, with Lieut. Thomas Ernest Johnston, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, son of Mr. Thomas Johnston, J.P., chairman of Omagh Urban Council, in charge of the escort. After Capt. Duncan marched Colonel H. Irvine, C.B.; Company-Sergeant-Major Cue, formerly an instructor of the Mid-Tyrone Battalion, and other discharged soldiers of the Tyrone Regiment. The procession, having marched round the church, proceeded up the centre aisle, and the colours were handed over to Rev. Mr. Peacock.

Colonel Irvine, C.B., said he had been asked to present this banner for the Glory of God and in grateful and loving remembrance of those brave officers, N.C.O.'s and men of the 2nd Mid-Tyrone Battalion of the Ulster Volunteers, now the 9th Battalion of the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, who fought and died in the great war in defence of their King and country. This battalion had been sent to France in October, 1915, and became a unit of the 109th Brigade of the splendid 36th (Ulster) Division, and was still there. It was originally formed on the outbreak of the war under the auspices of Captain (now Brigadier-General) Ricardo, D.S.O., ably assisted by the late Captain Philip Cruickshank, who died nobly in action leading his men on the famous 1st July, 1916.

Rev. Mr. Peacock then dedicated the banner, and directed that it be placed in the safe keeping of the rector, the churchwardens, and the select vestry of that church, to be a fitting reminder of those who so gallantly and gloriously laid down their lives in the cause of honour and freedom.

HOME FIRES BURNING -- IN EVERY ROOM.

THE SELFISH HOUSEHOLDER.

SCOTS SET US A GOOD EXAMPLE.

"Traveller" writes -- There would seem to be an impression abroad in Belfast that because of the cessation of hostilities there is no longer any need for coal economy. I came to this conclusion after a walk last evening along the Antrim Road, where I saw halls fully illuminated and several rooms in the same house ablaze with light. The fact is -- and I have my information from official authority -- the coal problem throughout Great Britain was never so acute as it is at the present moment, and the officials of the Government have quite an anxious time trying to arrange for the necessities of the householder, whilst attending at the same time to the tremendous demands of our transport service. From now until the end of March we must save every single ounce of fuel if we are to avert a serious shortage.

Most of us have been so well off in connection with home comforts that we cannot realise what a pinch means. I was in Scotland last week and I can say without any exaggeration that I seldom saw a fire except in a sitting-room, and that had generally to accommodate far more than could get near it. What impressed me more than anything else was the scrupulous care exercised by all and sundry in the economising of electric light. The very instant a light was not required it was switched off. The page boy was just as much alive to his obligation in this matter as the proprietor. I hope these remarks will be read by those prodigal householders who still persist in ignoring the Lord Mayor's appeal, and that in future they will show an example in thrift rather than in extravagance. We were all interested in keeping the home fires burning until the boys come home -- and after. To do this the rich as well as those not so well off must co-operate. Three fires in a house where one would suffice is a scandalous misconception of a citizen's responsibility at the present time.

WHAT OF THE ARMS ORDER?

REVOLVER VOLLEY AT FUNERAL.

Sinn Feiners from all parts of North Louth travelled to Dundalk on Sunday to attend the funeral of Mr. James Toal, one of the leaders of Sinn Fein in the district, and a man who had been in prison early this year on a charge of unlawful assembly.

Two companies of Sinn Fein Volunteers turned out in processional order, wearing black armlets surmounted by the Sinn Fein colours and with Sinn Fein rosettes mounted on the crepe.

The Emmet Band played the Dead March en route, and prominent in the cortege were the Cumman na m'Bhan in uniform and Sinn Fein Boy Scouts. Other societies represented were the G.A.A., the National Clubs, and the Boilermakers' Society.

In all over 6,000 people accompanied the remains to St. Patrick's Cemetery. Sinn Fein officials regulated the traffic. The coffin was draped with the rebel flag. The Rev. M. Kerr, C.C., officiated at the graveside, reciting the prayers in Latin and Irish.

When the grave had been closed and a number of wreaths placed on it a firing party of Volunteers fired three volleys from revolvers.

OUTRAGE AT DUNGANNON.

UNION JACK SET ON FIRE.

During Sunday night a large Union Jack, which had been floated all week from the balcony of the Northland Arms Hotel, George's Street, Dungannon, in honour of the Allies' crowning victory, was set on fire and completely destroyed, the pole being much burned also. As the flag was a considerable height above the street level, the inflammable substance by which it was set alight must have been attached to a pole.

Neither Mr. Wherry, the proprietor (whose son, Second-Lieut. J. H. Wherry, is a prisoner of war), nor any of the other occupants were aware of the outrage until the premises were opened this morning.

It may be added that the hoisting of a Union Jack on the Technical Institute, Ann Street, on receipt of the news of the cessation of hostilities, was heartily boohed by a crowd, who sang the "Soldiers' Song."

THANKSGIVINGS AT LARNE.

KING'S MESSAGES READ ON PARADE.

Services of thanksgiving for the cessation of hostilities were held at all the Larne churches yesterday, and the congregations were much above the average numerically. The singing of the Doxology and the National Anthem, with carefully selected Psalms and hymns, was a feature common to all the services, and appropriate addresses were delivered by the different ministers. In the evening at Gardenmore Presbyterian Church Lieut. Gunn gave a beautiful rendering of Kipling's "Recessional" to the tune "Melita," to the evident enjoyment of the very large congregation.

In the morning, at the temporary church at Larne naval base, a special service was conducted by the naval chaplain, Rev. R. Griffiths, M.A., when the rector of Larne, Rev. Andrew Boyd, M.A., delivered an eloquent address. Commodore Carpendale, C.B., read the lesson, and special thanksgiving prayers were said, an impressive service closing with the singing of the National Anthem.

After service a parade was held in the open near the signal station. The commodore, officers, and men of the naval base were present in force, together with the garrison detachment R.D.C., members of the W.R.N.S., and two Voluntary Aid Detachments. The message of his Majesty the King to the Navy was read by the Commodore, who subsequently briefly addressed the company.

He said he would like them to realise in their hearts that this was not an arbitrated victory, but a real downright victory, and that the proudest military Empire the world had ever known was down and out, beaten hip and thigh. The German armies had to give up their arms and retire, and they had also to give up their submarines, with which they had hoped to break the British spirit, and with the failure of which object his hearers had had so much to do. No one knew better than he did the value of the work done by the North Patrol. Day after day and night after night their vigilance and their energies had helped to achieve that great victory, and he was proud to be so closely associated with them. And that splendid message from the King assured them not only of his admiration, but of that of the whole Empire. Whatever their sphere of life in future he hoped they would prove worthy of the great trust and the great honour done to them in that message.

The King's message to the Army was then read by the senior military officer present, Lieut.-Colonel the Rev. D. H. Hanson, B.A., after which the Doxology was sung. The singing of the National Anthem and three hearty cheers for his Majesty, on the call of the Commodore, terminated a very interesting ceremony.

WHITEHEAD CHURCHES.

Impressive thanksgiving services were held in Whitehead Presbyterian Church on Sabbath last, and there were large congregations present at both morning and evening services. Several beautiful Allied flags were displayed in the porch and around the pulpit. The Rev. D. B. Knox, minister of the congregation, preached appropriate sermons. At the evening service the roll of honour was read for the last time, and the choir sang most effectively the anthem, "What are these?" under the conductorship of Mr. Alex. Dobson, precentor. The National Anthem was sung at the close of both services.

A special service was also held in Chester Avenue Church, Rev. T. J. Rea delivering an impressive and thoughtful address on the lessons of the war.

AT THE CUSTOM-HOUSE STEPS.

The Salvation Army and the North Belfast Mission united for an open-air thanksgiving service on Sunday at the Custom House steps. Rev. Wm. Maguire acted as chairman, while Brigadier Lord gave a stirring patriotic address. The bands from Ballymacarrett and Dublin Road united and played the National Anthems of the Allies -- Belgium, France, Italy, and Japan -- and suitable selections representing America and the Colonies. The huge concourse of people assembled concluded with the singing of "God Save the King."

DEATH OF MR. ROBERT MAGEE.

We regret to announce the death of Mr. Robert Magee, a well-known Belfast citizen, which took place on Saturday at his residence, 75 Woodvale Road. The deceased was a leading house and rent agent in the city. One of the earliest members of the West Belfast Unionist Association, his interest in the integrity of the Empire was zealously sustained throughout his life. From 1891 until 1898 he represented Smithfield Ward on the Poor-law Board, and devoted much time and consideration to the welfare of the community, and especially to the amelioration of the destitute poor. He was a large-hearted man, with generous impulses, and when he had the opportunity of doing a good work he thought neither of creed nor politics. For many years he resided in the Shankill district, where he was a persona grata, and by the community in general he was held in the highest esteem. He is survived by two sons -- Mr. W. J. Magee, an official of a prominent city assurance corporation, and Mr. Joseph Magee, accountant -- both well-known personalities in cricket circles.

THE ULSTER DIVISION.

A BATTLEFIELD MEMORIAL

APPEAL BY SIR EDWARD CARSON.

(To the Editor of the "Telegraph.")

Sir -- The end of the war immediately recalls to our minds the gallant deeds of the Ulster Division, and particularly of those who have lost their lives in Flanders.

I suggest that a monument be erected on a suitable site on the battlefield to commemorate for all time the heroic deeds of those men; and, to that end, that a Fund be started in which all sympathisers may participate; any balance to be devoted to the U.V.F. Patriotic Fund.

I shall be glad if any of your readers who desire to be associated with this memorial will forward their contributions to Lieut.-Colonel Sir James Craig, Bart., D.L., M.P., at the Old Town Hall, he having kindly consented to act as honorary treasurer. -- Yours, &c.
